I've got a lot to learn about making these entries. Can't get stuff to go where I want it. Oh well, suffice to say
I very nearly dumped this lens until I made these images earlier this evening. No longer 4 Sale :D

Thanks all. I really enjoy the full plate size. These have sort of a soft-crisp thing going on if you will. Interesting to note that when I looked at the portrait in the gg it looked as though it would just be mush. Even looking at the neg it looked like mush. Then you have a look at the positive and there really is some lovely definition. This old lens surprised me how it handled difficult light. Can't wait to do more. So many lenses, so little time. Marky Mud Face
My brother's middle boy. Technically not his, but
he has been dad since Mark was very small. He came
in the bargain when Jeff married his childhood
sweetheart, Donna.
Mr. & Mrs. Mark Kirkland
Mark swore marriage was not in the cards for him.
And we sort of believed him. Then he met Sandy
and his world changed.
Mark & Sandy
Ours too. What a treat for us to meet and mingle
with her beautiful family! I wish I could have
photgraphed them ALL. I settled for
Hazel & George, Sandy's grandparents.

with an 1872 Darlot Petzval lens. Exposure of 1/25th
The Petzval is about 12 1/2 inch
focal length and was of course, shot wide open.

Excellent images Jim. You certainly have the technique sorted for LF portraits. -- Steve
My Bad
I haven't checked in for a while and I see there are some lovely images to look at and read about. WELL DONE! It's nice to see Jonathan's idea beginning to take shape.
Here are some images done in a hotel room in Las Vegas with a little no-name petzval and 4X5 speed graphic.

I did these with efke 25 film hoping to get close to the feel of 8X10 tonality with a 4X5 capture. Comments / questions always appreciated.

Cheap Lenses
I thought I would follow up on yesterdays rant by talking about the other end of the spectrum. Really REALLY inexpensive lenses that have a grand look. So yesterday I made a couple of photos with a real sleeper. Yep, I made them just because I wanted to see what the lens could do. Guess what, they are gorgeous and I plan to do a LOT of other stuff with this particular lens. What is it you ask? Later. Let me preface that if I put it on Ebay I wouldn't get $55 bucks for it.
white coffee cup
I just love the soft peaches and cream look. I only made 2 images and both are keepers. I used
the Venerable Kodak 2D and Freestyle APHS Ortho film
elevation wheel
Both of these are just rough and reddy scans. I did print both of these today just for a first look on 11X14 Kodak matt RC paper that is probably 25 years old. Beautiful prints and very easy, no messing around.
OOPS. Out of time. My steak is done. I'll have to tell ya later what the lens was....................Jim Galli
